This is a picture I took of my photo professor, John Telford, in Death Valley in 2009. John just retired from teaching photography at BYU after 20 years. John was a wonderful educator that touched so many lives. If you did not have the opportunity to learn from John then you missed out on a special treat. I know that I owe a tremendous deal to John and his efforts. The photo world is a richer place due to his contributions. Thank you for everything you have done!

...and continue to do. I didn't let him enjoy his retirement very long. He is now teaching a class for me at UVU. I had missed being in his classes so much that I have sat in on his class every day this semester.

How I See The World

When people discuss looking at a problem differently, I take it literally. My camera of choice is large format. For those that don't know, when light passes through a lens it inverts everything and so that is what I see when looking through my camera. Upside down and backwards definitely gives you a new perspective on what you want to photograph. So if people accuse me of thinking backwards they only have it half right. (p.s. this is Mooney Falls at Havasupai)

This is a recently found, never worked on negative from 2007 taken at Havasupai. The spot in this photograph no longer exists and a new canyon and large waterfall have taken its place called Rock Falls. (Although this would now be 100+ feet in the air from current ground level) There was a large flood a few years ago that diverted the river and carved a new path/canyon. Ironic that I took this picture due to my amazement of the scale of erosion that occurs here. How little did I know.

The biggest threat to the June Sucker (previous post) is the common carp. The carp are an introduced species that have taken over and completely changed the ecosystem. Over 90% of the biomass in the lake is now carp. I went out with the fisherman in charge of removing them. Insane! Never seen so many fish in my life. I'll post a few more pictures soon.

"Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through."

I have a few shots from last summer that I never got around to sharing. The story behind this image: I drove all over Acadia National Park in Maine with my parents. It was pretty but I was underwhelmed photographically. I didn't even pull out the camera until we started to head for our hotel and we crossed an old bridge outside of the park. This is where the river met the ocean. Kind of weird to be intrigued more by the neighborhoods surrounding the national park than the park itself.

What advice would you give young photographers?

You must have something to "say". You must be brutally honest with yourself about this. Think about history , politics, science, literature, music, film, and anthropology. What affects does one discipline have over another? What makes "man" tick? Today , with everyone being able to easily make technically perfect photographs with a cell phone, you need to be an "author". It is all about authorship, authorship and authorship. Many young photographers come to me and tell me their motivation for being a photographer is to "travel the world" or to "make a name" for themselves. Wrong answers in my opinion. Those are collateral incidentals or perhaps even the disadvantages of being a photographer. Without having tangible ideas , thoughts, feelings, and something almost "literary" to contribute to "the discussion", today's photographer will become lost in the sea of mediocrity. Photography is now clearly a language. As with any language, knowing how to spell and write a gramatically correct "sentence" is , of course, necessary. But, more importantly, today's emerging photographers now must be "visual wordsmiths" with either a clear didactic or an esoteric imperitive. Be a poet, not a technical "writer". Perhaps more simply put, find a heartfelt personal project. Give yourself the "assignment" you might dream someone would give you. Please remember, you and only you will control your destiny. Believe it, know it, say it.

Kodachrome's Obituary

Kodachrome was pronounced dead today at 12 p.m. central time in Parsons, Kansas at the age of 75. It was introduced to the world on April 15, 1935. Its untimely passing was due to a new, rampant and destructive disease that has infected many areas of our lives called "digital laziness." Kodachrome was announced terminally ill by Kodak on June 22, 2009 when they quit manufacturing the film. It finally met its end today as Dwayne's Photos will process the last rolls of this remarkable film.

Kodachrome led a good life and revolutionized an industry and the way that the world saw and recorded color. It broke down the barriers of color migration and made the vision of full and vibrant color in motion pictures and later in the photographic still consumer market a reality.

Kodachrome rewarded generations of skilled users with a richness of color and a unique treatment of light. It stands as a photographic landmark of photography's golden age. A state park in Utah was named after this wonderful film, Kodachrome Basin. Paul Simon wrote a legendary sing entitled Kodachrome. National Geographic's most famous pictures were shot using this film.

“It’s more than a film, it’s a pop culture icon,” said Todd Gustavson, a curator from the George Eastman House, a photography museum in Rochester in the former residence of the Kodak founder. “If you were in the postwar baby boom, it was the color film, no doubt about it.”

The film was invented by two professional musicians: Leopold Godowsky, Jr. and Leopold Mannes. It truly could be considered to be heralded as a moment of heaven meets earth. This relationship was emphasized by playing off of the names of the inventors in a famous saying describing how remarkable the film was to the people of that day, that "Kodachrome was made by God and Man."

It is survived by some wonderful negative films and a few slide films and thankfully some wonderful black and white films. It is also survived by many processes much older than itself such as wet collodion and tintype which has made a surprising resurgence in part to the same disease that killed Kodachrome.

It was proceeded in passing by Polaroid, some Fuji films, Kodak paper, Agfa Films and many others.
